NHL Hurricanes and NFL Panthers Modify ESPN’s Chris Fowler for Expansion Draft Confusion

Chris Fowler made things worse for ESPN Wednesday night in the network’s first major event since he became the NHL rights holder again.

He showed a lack of hockey skills when he organized the expansion draft to supply the league’s 32nd franchise, Seattle Kraken. If he wasn’t failing geography by calling the New York City Islanders and Devils teams, he was making a terrible Freudian slip with the North Carolina NHL franchise.

John Buccigross and Linda Cohn never would. At least Fowler didn’t call the Canes the Whalers (although he did make a Mighty Ducks reference to the Anaheim team).

EXPANSION DRAFT: Tracking Kraken Picks, Rumors

The Carolina teams involved in the confusion saw an opportunity on social media and, well, they got to the bottom of the net.

Of course, the NHL Panthers had to get in, too (they play South Florida, ESPN).

From Fowler, um, struggles It came hours after the Kraken picks were leaked online. The only suspense in the ESPN2 broadcast was whether there would be any parallel deals or exchanges. FYI, none were announced.

But there was still some uncertainty as viewers waited to see if Fowler, whose majors are college football and tennis, would pass a segment cleanly.
